A Note On Why Ductile Iron Is An Innovative Technology – Part 2

Pig Iron goes in as raw material, which is low in phosphorus and sulphur, that is imperative without which the desired product cannot be achieved. While tin and copper added provides tensile strength and ability to withstand shock, silicon helps in the formation of graphite which offers iron the much needed non-corrosive property. The ductile iron is used for a range of applications due to its ductility and non-corrosive characteristics.

The major application of ductile iron is in the manufacture of pipes that are popular the world over. Ductile Iron Pipes are an excellent alternative to cast iron and mild steel pipes. Not long back the market was dominated by the mild steel pipe manufacturers. There are quite a number of ductile iron manufacturers in the water engineering industry. The applications of ductile iron pipes are numerous: transmission and distribution lines, water supply projects, sewage treatment projects/schemes. These products are known for their ability to withstand shocks and vibrations due to crushing loads and resist water hammer.

The applications of ductile iron are not limited to only pipe manufacture, but also in automotive components where it has replaced aluminium as well as steel. Applications here include manufacture of hubs and structural parts of several machines including frames needed in the wind power industry as ductile iron can withstand fatigue loads. Another unique application of modular cast iron is that the iron plates of piano are made out of it to which the strings are attached.
