Comparison of welding performance of Ductile Iron against Grey Iron

By vr foundries on 5-September-2019

This short blog will cover how Ductile Iron fares in terms of welding performance against grey iron. The welding performance of grey iron and ductile iron is not appreciable. The main issues include crack and extra hardness.

Grey iron has high carbon and low tensile strength characteristics. The grey iron when subjected to welding may produce a few cracks; therefore, the welding performance of grey iron is not that good.

However, as seen in the previous blogs, the ductile iron can produce extra hardness to the welding area. The hardness level can reach up to 600-700HBS. The welding may also cause some cracks. From the welding point of view, the performance is not appreciable.

This said and done the mechanical properties of the ductile iron including elongation and tensile strength are better compared to grey iron; therefore, the ductile iron is better compared to grey iron.

There are two ways by which the welding problems can be improved:

  • Heat conditioned welding will improve things.
  • Use electrode for cast iron or better known as cast iron electrode.
