Ductile Iron Machining
What are the Advantages of Ductile Iron Machining?

You might have read some of our previous blogs related to the advantages of Ductile Iron over other casting materials. This short blog this week will take you through some of the advantages that ductile iron has when it comes to machining over other materials. You can also check our previous blogs on the comparison between ductile iron and grey iron for more details.

Here are the machining advantages of ductile iron compared to the likes of steel:
# Increased depth to diameter drilling ratios
# Quicker feed rates
# Increased spindle speed
# Lasting life
# Guaranteed tool life

When it comes to the intermediate-strength grades of ductile iron, it provides better machinability compared to steel due to the following reasons:

# The increased amount of silicon content present in the ductile iron reduces the toughness of ferrite (a combination of oxide of iron and one or more other metals containing ferrimagnetic properties)

# The graphite spheres offer ductile iron its free-machining characteristics owing to the graphite’s lubrication properties.

# These are the two properties that gives ductile iron increased depth diameter drilling ratios, quicker feed rates, increased spindle speeds and guaranteed tool life over use.
