What are the differences between Ductile vs. Cast Iron Valves?

The dilemma between Cast iron vs. Ductile iron has been in existence for several decades. However, there lies only a thin line of difference that makes you choose between them. Having in mind the various factors associated with the buyer, his/her persona, the need and applications, you can go for it.

Though it is a strong material, it can handle pressures than just about any plastic. When rated pressure is crossed, it tends to bend, and finally gets crack. This is because of its non-ductility nature meaning virtually zero ductility.

It can handle high pressures and temperatures without flinching. Having its ductile nature, this material is less likely to crack when bent. The impressive structural integrity (nodular graphite) gives its ductile nature.


This material may rust over time, and thus regular maintenance is a must so as to ensure that the valve is free from corrosion. Like cast iron, ductile iron may also rust over time, but not as easily as cast iron.

Ease of Installation

Among many installation options, cast iron valves are usually bolted using flanges as this is an extraordinary method for high or low-pressure applications. Bolting with the use of flanges stands to be the first option for most of the applications.


Welding is difficult and not encouraged. Welding is not recommended for ductile iron too.


Owing to its effortless manufacturing process, it becomes the most economical option for buyers. Compared to cast iron, manufacturing of ductile iron involves a complex and chemical fabrication process making it expensive.


It is highly suited for the Construction industry. It finds application in the automotive industry (particularly trucks, tractors, etc).
