There are numerous techniques and methods employed in the manufacture of various metal components. According to the application and why a particular metal part is used, a number of procedures go into the manufacture of metal pieces of the highest quality. A question that one may have is whether to go for forgings or casting, and what will be the best process based on your application? Which process would be most cost effective? Which process would make the metal component effective? Read on to determine the differences and which process would be best recommended for your business.

What are Castings?
Casting is the process by which the metal is heated to a certain temperature, the molten state is then poured into a die and the desired shape is produced. Casting is advantageous only when component’s shape is required to be large or if the pattern is intricate. Another plus is machining costs can be reduced as the component can be produced to the desired specifications.

What are Forgings?
Forging is the method where metal is subjected to heating, then hammered and made into the specified shape. Though forgings are basically stronger compared to castings, they aren’t free from limitations when it comes to manufacturing capabilities. Components cannot be very complex or intricate when forging. Generally if a component is to be forged and also required to meet specific size requirements, it has to be machined after the production process.

What is better: Forgings or Castings?
Which production method for metal component is better? The answer lies on the industrial application of component. Because both their forgings and castings have their own merits, so depending on how the component will be utilized decide which production method will be the best fit.
