Why Ductile Iron Castings is the most preferred material for industry applications?

Ductile Iron, also called ductile cast iron, spheroidal graphite, nodular cast iron, spheroidal graphite cast iron and SG iron, is a cast iron type that was invented by Keith mills in 1943. Ductile iron isn’t a single material but is part of a multiple materials with varying characteristics that can be produced for ranging properties through the control of the microstructure. Though most types of cast iron are brittle iron, ductile iron is known for its high resistance to impact and fatigue, thanks to its nodular graphite inclusions.
Application-wise, much of the Ductile Iron produced is mainly used for making ductile iron pipes for water and sewer lines. This said ductile iron castings are used in a wide range of applications in multiple market segments. It is built to alternate polymeric materials like HDPE, PVC, LDPE and polypropylene which are generally more lightweight in nature than ductile iron or steel, though DI is more flexible, and provides greater protection from physical damage and vagaries of nature.
Applications of Ductile Iron
The applications of Ductile Iron can be varied, but there are also some specific applications, especially in the manufacture of automotive components where their strength is generally greater than that of aluminium whilst not as high as steel. There are other major applications of Ductile Iron including off-highway diesel trucks, farm tractors, Class 8 truck and oil pumps. In the area of wind power generation, nodular cast iron is applicable for hubs and structural components such as machine frames. Nodular cast iron is perfect for large and complex shapes, high fatigue loads and common castings. Ductile iron castings are therefore used in a wide range of industrial applications in addition to those mentioned above.
