Casting metal is defined as a process through which metal is formed into a particular shape with the help of a mould. The process of casting has been in existence for several centuries and produced a gamut of items using metal. Based on what the object is that is subjected to casting or the type of application expected out of that object, you need to choose the metal ideally built for casting. Since the beginning of casting, metal workers and those skilled in casting have inferred that different metals are suitable for a variety of applications. 

Understanding which metal is ideally suited for each application is important to maximize the working nature of your metal casting. Some of the most commonly used metals for castings include Grey Iron, White Iron, Ductile Iron, Stainless Steel, Copper, Zinc, Aluminium, among others. This blog will discuss the properties and application of Grey Iron and SG Ductile, two of the most popular metals used in castings. 

Grey Iron:

Undoubtedly, one of the most commonly used casting metals, particularly in the industrial environment. The material’s characteristic strength and density add to its versatility. Grey cast Iron can be readily modified when subjected to the casting process for greater pliability for various industry applications, or stronger for applications in vibration control, or other applications wherein there is a need for increased tensile strength.  Grey Iron Castings is not only known for its versatility for the purpose of industrial metal casting, it’s also economical when procured in bulk volumes.

Ductile Iron (SG) Casting:

Another iron suited for metal casting, known for its versatility. Ductile Iron or SG Iron Casting is perfect for applications requiring extremely high durability and strength in combination with reduced levels of shrinkage and weight when the process of metal casting is done with. Ductile is the term used to explain the ability of the metal to be stretched to the maximum without compromising on pliability and toughness. This put this iron-type to be the perfect casting material for multiple environments from aesthetic to industrial.
