Foundries in India – Brief Industry Profile: Part 1

By admin on 5-October-2021

The Indian foundry industry manufactures metal cast components for a range of applications in Tractor, Auto, Machine tools, Railways, Pipe Fittings, Sanitary, Aerospace, Defence, Textile, Earth Moving, Power Machinery, Electrical, Cement, Wind turbine generators, Valves/Pumps and the list goes on. The foundry industry has generated a turnover of nearly USD 19 billion with an export value close to USD 3.1 billion. When it comes to Grey Iron Castings, it has a major share and enjoys 69 per cent of total castings produced. There are about 4600 units out of which the MSMEs constitute 90 per cent.

About 1500 units enjoy International Quality Accreditation. There are many large foundries that are both hi-tech and competitive at the global level. Several foundries use cupolas with LAM Coke, though these are slowly moving to Induction Melting. This is due to the increasing awareness about the natural ecosystem and many Foundries in India are shifting gears to induction furnaces, and some units in Agra are transitioning to cokeless cupolas.

General Economic Scenario:

The current government has rolled out a number of innovative schemes that directly contributes to the growth of the foundry sector in India such as “Make In India”, “Stand up India, and this, in turn, has enabled “Ease of doing business”, infrastructure, thereby relaxing FDI norms to boost funding and investments in the area of manufacturing and introducing new initiatives and enhancing cooperation in upskilling talents and capabilities.
