Production Lead Times in the Foundry Industry – Part 1

Lead time is one of the most important characteristics of any production process, now whether that involves the foundry sector or any other supplier in the manufacturing niche. Lead time is easily defined as the time between when an order is first placed and when it is delivered by the manufacturer. Lead time, as a factor, is easily influenced by several external and internal factors. External factors include labour and market conditions and internal factors are related to the production itself. Both equally exert an equal amount of influence on the lead time.

Typically, lead times for the production of ductile iron castings are estimated to be 8 to 12 weeks. However, many ductile iron foundries will have to schedule orders 30+ weeks out. Why the delay? Let’s explore more.

Is the casting complicated?

There’s no denying that a more complicated design will involve a longer lead time compared to a relatively simpler one. Factors such as shape, size, or the need for one or more cores to produce hollow cavities within the finished component decide the complexity of a casting. It must be remembered that every factor adds to both the quality control (QC) processes and design fueling the lead time.

Capacity of the foundry

The capacity of the foundry overall is another key factor in calculating the lead time of a ductile iron casting. By capacity, we mean the interface of the right equipment and capabilities in general terms. Another factor is the production schedule of the foundry and its realistic capability to fit into the queue to increase efficiency and quality levels. For instance, if the foundry gets a similar order in the future, it may accommodate the client’s needs faster leveraging a more optimized environment.
