Grey Iron casting is manufactured in a broad range of qualities, from airborne turbine housings to even counterweights. So, what do we mean by quality here? The term ‘quality’ is an indication of how well a grey Iron casting product satisfies the requirements of the buyers and the consistency levels by which specific requirements are addressed by castings in production volume. The level of consistency in quality from order to order and from start to finish (in other words, the last casting) in order plays a significant role and should majorly help identify reliable grey iron casting manufacturers and suppliers.

The term “high quality” sometimes is interchangeably used to reflect superiority in a specific property like excellent surface finish or high tensile strength. But it must be remembered that specifying superfluous quality requirements can invariably lead to an increase in the cost of grey iron castings, which isn’t a recommended purchasing practice. Grey iron casting suppliers should focus only on meeting what are accepted quality levels. The factors that should be considered in determining the quality of grey iron castings are characteristics of the metal, reliability of the grey iron casting product, consistency and accuracy of dimensions, and how smooth the finish of the Grey cast iron product is.

When the requirements for any of these are found to be excessive, it will impact the grey iron casting’s direct cost because there may be a simplified production technique or process available which necessarily might not satisfy the accepted quality level need for an extremely skilled workforce and/or increased production time; maybe use of expensive materials and/or machinery or equipment the need for an extra layer of inspection and finally, a greater percentage of reject may occur as a result. All said quality requirements that are deemed necessary shouldn’t be subject to compromise.

Reduced cost is not an acceptable reason for buying Grey iron castings that are par below the expected quality standards whatever initial cost savings achieved could be likely offset by greater cost or production issues occurring out of using such grey iron castings. It is pretty much unfortunate that customers may not be able to realize the prevalence of this latter cost. Though quality requirements can be established by sample castings or design specifications, this is not easy to do, as grey iron casting quality is usually considered in terms of the proven reputation of grey iron casting manufacturers.

The different quality certifications that grey iron foundries may have succeeded in achieving aren’t used to specify the quality of the casting the customer again is accountable for specifying the quality levels that the casting must satisfy to be acceptable.

The foundry certification gives the buyer a measure of assurance or confidence that whatever the quality process is used by the foundry will be highly consistent with the quality level designated by the buyer.
