Why do Iron Casting Foundries prefer high-quality Ductile (SG) iron for casting – Part 1 ?
By admin on 5-April-2022
Foundries all over are increasingly turning their focus on high-quality ductile (SG) iron castings for a gamut of industrial applications. Ductile (SG) iron, in comparison to Grey Iron Castings, exhibits considerably increased mechanical strength, impact-resistance characteristics, and higher flexibility and as it goes, it is perfect for the design of pipes, gearboxes & wheels, automobile accessories & components, robust machine frames, and other allied products. To stay with the wave of growing industrial requirements and technological developments, the major casting companies in Coimbatore are continuously updating their product portfolio to offer optimal value for their clients. This blog will briefly deal with how SG Iron Castings are leading to the growth of the foundry ecosystem in Coimbatore.
Increased Flexibility & Elasticity:
SG Iron is alternatively called spheroidal iron or nodular iron. Ductile iron comprises its custom microstructure, leading to increased ductility and general mechanical strength to the machine material and components. Because of the increased durability and strength, SG iron castings have found use in a variety of applications. The carbon composition in SG iron usually ranges between the 3 and 3.9 percent mark (and this is considerably greater compared to the presence of carbon in cast steel).
High Impact-resistance and Compressive Strength
High machinability and general reliability are major strengths of high-quality SG Iron. The increased fluidity and tensile stress of the material reduce the chances of SG iron sewer grates and several other products prone to accidental damage. Mechanical fatigue is reduced even after prolonged use. This is due to the relatively higher resistance to the impact of the SG iron, therefore, drilling or cutting the material is convenient, whilst custom surface treatments could be easily achieved as well.
Easy weldable with improved shock-absorption capabilities
Many manhole cover exporters use SG iron for structural welding. Generally, the improved weldability of SG iron is a key factor for its increased adoption at iron casting foundries. The significantly greater damping capacity of SG iron (in comparison to steel) guarantees good shock absorption capacity as well. Whilst grey iron comes with comparatively greater damping capability, it could become non-elastic in the relatively low-stress range
Machining Advantages
Another highlight of SG Iron is its machining advantage. Most Casting manufacturers in Coimbatore use high-grade raw materials in sewage grates and several other casting products. Ductile iron has a very high silicon volume that increases the general machining capabilities whilst the relatively high feed rates and improved spindle speeds account for its enhanced usability and convenient handling and maintenance. The material features an optimal depth-to-diameter ratio (D: d) ratio and is therefore considered for deep-hole drilling.
Lightweight and high dimensional accuracy:
Compared to most varieties of steel alloy, SG is lightweight by almost 8-10 percent. This lightweight dress of ductile iron enables manhole cover exporters to facilitate shipments cost-effectively and efficiently. SG iron’s strength-to-weight ratio and dimensional accuracy are key factors too, whilst corrosion resistance enhances its usefulness for making drainage and water pipes.
